What is the story behind Goddess Skandamata
The story behind Goddess Skandamata is associated with the fifth form of Goddess Durga, worshipped during the Navratri festival. The name “Skandamata” is derived from two words: “Skanda,” which refers to Lord Kartikeya (also known as Skanda), and “Mata,” meaning “mother.” Skandamata is revered as the mother of Lord Kartikeya.
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati, after transforming into various forms to battle demons and restore peace, assumed the form of Skandamata to become the divine mother of Lord Kartikeya.
The legend narrates that once there was a demon named Tarakasura who had become invincible due to a boon obtained from Lord Brahma. The boon granted him immense power, making him a formidable threat to the gods and sages.
The gods sought the intervention of Lord Shiva to overcome Tarakasura’s tyranny. However, Lord Shiva was in deep meditation and was inaccessible. To awaken Lord Shiva from his meditative state, the gods decided that Lord Shiva must be married and have a child.
Goddess Parvati, known for her deep devotion and love for Lord Shiva, realized the significance of this task. With her divine powers, she meditated intensely, seeking to unite with Lord Shiva and bring forth a child who could defeat Tarakasura.
Impressed by her devotion and determination, Lord Shiva granted her wish, and they were blessed with a son, Lord Kartikeya. Skandamata, in her divine form, is depicted holding Lord Kartikeya in her lap.
Goddess Skandamata is portrayed with four arms, two of which hold lotus flowers, while one hand holds Lord Kartikeya and the other is raised in a gesture of blessing. She is often depicted riding a lion, symbolizing her power and valor.
Devotees worship Goddess Skandamata to seek her blessings for the well-being and protection of their children. She is believed to bestow motherly love, guidance, and strength to her devotees. Her blessings are sought by parents for the welfare and success of their children.
The story of Goddess Skandamata highlights the divine bond between a mother and her child. It represents the eternal love and protection a mother provides to her offspring. Devotees honor Skandamata to seek her divine grace and ensure the well-being and growth of their children.
