The story behind Goddess Kushmanda is associated with the fourth form of Goddess Durga, worshipped during the Navratri festival. The name “Kushmanda” is derived from two words: “Ku” means “a little,” and “Ushma” means “warmth” or “energy.” It signifies her ability to create and provide energy to the universe.
According to Hindu mythology, after defeating the demon Mahishasura as Goddess Chandraghanta, Goddess Parvati transformed into Goddess Kushmanda to bring light and energy to the universe.
The legend goes that when the universe was shrouded in eternal darkness, there was no existence of life. To illuminate the cosmos and infuse it with energy, Goddess Kushmanda smiled, creating the radiance of the sun and filling the universe with light. Her divine smile is said to have been responsible for creating the initial cosmic energy that sustains all life forms.
Depicted with eight arms, Goddess Kushmanda holds various weapons and objects symbolizing her powers. She holds a mala (rosary) in one hand, a lotus flower in another, a chakra (discus) in another, and so on. She is often depicted riding a lion, representing her ferocious aspect.
The worship of Goddess Kushmanda is believed to bestow vitality, health, and energy upon her devotees. It is said that she blesses them with improved physical strength and the ability to overcome obstacles.
