The story of Chintamani Theur is associated with a sage named Kapila who was famous for his powers of meditation and devotion to Lord Vishnu, another major deity in the Hindu religion. Kapila had a son named Guna who was a great devotee of Lord Ganesha.

One day, Guna went to the forest to gather firewood for his father’s Yajna (a Hindu ritual of worship) and stumbled upon a group of demons who were plotting to kill Kapila and disrupt the Yajna. Guna was able to overhear their conversation and rushed back to warn his father.

Kapila was grateful to his son for saving his life and asked him what he wanted in return. Guna requested that his father build a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha so that he could worship him every day. Kapila agreed and built the temple of Chintamani in the village of Theur, near Pune in Maharashtra, India.

The temple of Chintamani Theur is one of the eight temples of the Ashtavinayaka pilgrimage and is dedicated to Lord Ganesha in the form of Chintamani, the god who removes worries and anxieties. The idol of Lord Ganesha in the temple is depicted with his trunk turned towards the left and holding a precious gem known as the Chintamani in one of his hands.

The word “Chintamani” means “wish-fulfilling gem” in Sanskrit, and it is believed that Lord Ganesha, in this form, has the power to fulfill the wishes of his devotees and remove all their worries and anxieties. The temple is visited by millions of devotees every year, who come to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha and to offer prayers and offerings.

The temple of Chintamani Theur is also known for its beautiful architecture and is considered to be a masterpiece of ancient Indian temple design. It is said that the temple was built during the reign of the Peshwas, who were great patrons of the arts and architecture.
