Shree Varadvinayaka is a form of Lord Ganesha worshipped at the temple in Mahad, Maharashtra, India. The temple is one of the Ashtavinayak temples, in which are eight sacred temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The story of Shree Varadvinayaka Mahad legends says as follows:

A handsome King Rukmangada once visited the ashram of Rishi Vachaknavi where he met his wife Mukunda. She was fascinated seeing the king but he spurned her.

As Lord Indra was once enchanted by Mukunda’s beauty, being masked as Rukmangada he approached her. From him she gave the birth to a son named Grutsamad. Due course after knowing truth of his birth, he left to the Bhadraka forest for meditation. This forest is today called Mahad.

Grutsamad prayed to Lord Vinayaka to purge him of the sin that his birth entailed, and his wish was granted. The place where Lord Vinayaka appeared before Grutsamad to grant this boon is the site of the Varadavinayaka temple.

The temple is built on a hill, and visitors have to climb a flight of stairs to reach the temple. The idol of Lord Ganesha in this temple is believed to be Swayambhu, which means it is self-manifested and not installed by any human being.

The Mahad Varadvinayak temple is famous for its unique architecture and features. The idol of Lord Ganesha in this temple is carved in such a way that his trunk is turned towards the right and is covered with sindoor. Devotees believe that applying the sindoor on Lord Ganesha’s trunk can help fulfill their wishes.
