What is the story behind Shree Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga – is depicted as below

Shree Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the town of Trimbak in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, India. The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.

Legend says that Gautama Rishi lived on the Brahmagiri hills with his wife, Ahilya. There was a drought of 24 years; people were affected by the pangs of hunger. Daily in the morning, Gautama Rishi sowed grains in the surrounding fields of his Ashram. Lord Varun (God of the rain), pleased with the sage of Gautama, he made rainfall everywhere near sage’s Ashram, which was in Trimbakeshwar. Because of Gautama Rishi devotion and regular prayers, God blessed him and abundant food grains got cultivated. Gautam Rishi kept feeding these foodgrains to all other sage and people living nearby Ashram.

Envied Lord Indra ordered Varun dev to rain all over the Trimbakeshwar, so that drought will over, Rishis will go back to their own places, and merits of Gautam Rishi will get less. But Gautama requested all Rishis to stay back and kept on feeding them. The other Rishi also felt envy of him and sent a cow to Gautam Rishi’s field. When Gautam Rishi tried to frighten the Cow away from his fields, Cow died.

Sage Gautama worshipped Lord Shiva, requesting him to release the Ganga river on earth, due to bathing in the Ganga River would set him free of his sins. Lord Shiva ordered Ganga River and told her to stay there. The Kushavarta Pond that exists now in Godavari River, people say it as one of the form of Ganga. All Rishi’s requested to Lord Shiva to stay there, which Lord Shiva did in the form of Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga.

The temple has a unique architecture and is built in the Hemadpanthi style, which was popular in Maharashtra during the 13th century. The temple has three lingas, representing Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva, and is considered to be the only temple in India where devotees can offer puja to all three deities together.

Shree Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is a popular pilgrimage site, and thousands of devotees visit the temple every year to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. The temple also hosts the Kumbh Mela, a major Hindu festival, once every twelve years, which attracts millions of devotees from all over the world.
