What is the story behind Shree Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga – The legend behind depicted as below.

Shree Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga is a Hindu temple located in the town of Rameswaram in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.

According to Hindu mythology, the story behind the Shree Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga goes like this:

Legend has it that Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, worshipped Lord Shiva at this site after returning from his victorious battle against the demon king Ravana in Lanka. Lord Rama and his army of monkeys built a bridge, known as the Ram Setu, across the sea from Rameswaram to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita, who was kidnapped by Ravana.

After the battle was won, Lord Rama wanted to absolve himself of the sin of killing Ravana, so that he asked Lord Shiva for guidance. Lord Shiva advised him to install a Jyotirlinga at Rameswaram, which would absolve him of all his sins.

Lord Rama then sent his trusted devotee Hanuman to bring a lingam (an emblem of Lord Shiva) from the Himalayas. However, Hanuman was delayed, and so Lord Rama fashioned a lingam out of sand and installed it at Rameswaram. When Hanuman finally arrived with the lingam, Lord Rama installed it alongside the sand lingam.
