What is the story behind Shree Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga – legend depicted as below.
Shree Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga is a Hindu temple located in Ellora caves in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.
According to Hindu mythology, the story behind the Shree Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga goes like this:
Legend has it that there was a wealthy woman named Kusuma who lived in a village near the present-day temple site. Kusuma was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva and would regularly perform puja (worship) at a nearby temple.
However, her husband, who was not a believer in Lord Shiva, resented her devotion and often ridiculed her for it. One day, during a drought, Kusuma’s husband demanded that she give him all of her wealth to buy food for the family. Kusuma gave him everything she had, but he was not satisfied and continued to demand more.
Desperate for money, Kusuma went to a nearby city to work as a maid in a rich merchant’s house. She saved all of her earnings and built a small temple to Lord Shiva, hoping to continue her worship. However, her husband discovered her secret and destroyed the temple in a fit of rage.
Kusuma was heartbroken and prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before her and promised to grant her a wish. Kusuma wished for the temple to be rebuilt and for Lord Shiva to reside there forever.
Lord Shiva granted her wish, and the temple was rebuilt. The Jyotirlinga at Grishneshwar is said to have been installed by Lord Shiva himself, and it is believed that a pilgrimage to this temple can help one attain salvation and fulfill their wishes.
The temple is also associated with several other legends and is a popular destination for devotees of Lord Shiva.
