What is the story behind Shree Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga
What is the story behind Shree Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga – Shree Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The legend behind its origin is as follows:
The legend behind the Shree Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is primarily based on the story of the demon Tripurasura. It is said that Tripurasura was a powerful demon who was granted a boon by Lord Brahma, which made him almost invincible. The demon became arrogant and started to wreak havoc on the world, causing destruction and chaos.
To stop Tripurasura, Lord Shiva took the form of Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga and battled with him for a long time. After a fierce battle, Lord Shiva was finally able to defeat Tripurasura and destroy his three cities (Tripuras), which were believed to be made of gold, silver, and iron. The destruction of these cities marked the triumph of good over evil, and Lord Shiva became known as the destroyer of the three cities. It is believed that the Shree Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple was built at the spot where Lord Shiva emerged victorious over Tripurasura.
Another Legend says, once there was a demon named Bhima. After receiving a boon from Bramha, he became very powerful and had defeated many gods, causing chaos and destruction in the world.
The gods then approached Lord Shiva and requested him to intervene and save them from the demon. Agreeing on their request Lord Shiva then appeared in the form of a divine light. In fierce battle Lord Shiva killed him with Trishul (trident). Bhima’s soul then merged with Lord Shiva’s and he attained Moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).
The place where this divine incident took place was named as Bhimashankar. A temple was built at the site and it became one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is located in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra, India and is a popular pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Shiva. The temple is situated in the village of Bhorgiri, near Pune, and is surrounded by lush green forests and hills. The area is also a popular destination for trekking and nature walks, with several trails leading to the temple. Bhimashankar Temple is visited by a large number of devotees throughout the year, especially during the festivals of Mahashivratri and Kartik Poornima.
