What is the story behind Goddess Chandraghanta – The legend of Goddess Chandraghanta is associated with the third form of Goddess Durga, who is worshipped during the Navratri festival. The name “Chandraghanta” translates to “one who has the crescent moon shaped like a bell” and refers to the distinctive crescent moon adorning her forehead.
According to Hindu mythology, after her incarnation as Goddess Brahmacharini, Goddess Parvati decided to marry Lord Shiva. However, before the wedding, a demon named Mahishasura unleashed terror on the celestial beings and sought to conquer the entire universe.
Witnessing the chaos and suffering caused by Mahishasura, Goddess Parvati transformed herself into Goddess Chandraghanta to combat the demon and restore peace and harmony.
As Goddess Chandraghanta, she possesses a fierce and warrior-like form. She is depicted with ten arms, each holding various weapons like swords, arrows, tridents, and a lotus flower. In her third left hand, she holds a bell-shaped crescent moon, which emanates divine vibrations and fills the surroundings with positive energy.
The legend narrates that when Goddess Chandraghanta emerged, her roar resonated like a thunderous bell, which caused Mahishasura and his army to tremble with fear. Her divine aura and fierce appearance instilled confidence and hope in the gods and goddesses.
A fierce battle ensued between Goddess Chandraghanta and Mahishasura’s forces. Her valor and divine weapons proved to be unstoppable, overpowering the demon army. Ultimately, she triumphed over Mahishasura, slaying him and liberating the universe from his tyranny.
