What is the story behind Shree Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga – The Shree Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the ancient city of Varanasi (also known as Kashi), in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is believed to be one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.

The legend goes that after creating the universe, Lord Shiva, manifested in the form of a fiery pillar with splitting the earth’s surface flashing towards the skies. Different segments of this dynamic light manifested in the form of Jyotirlingams in twelve different sites. It is said that Kashi is one of them. Here, Lord Shiva is hailed as Vishwanath or The Vishveshvara (Vishwa+Ishwara), the God of the Universe. And this boundless beam of light symbolises the infinite nature of Lord Shiva and his might.

Moreover, Kashi is believed to be the oldest surviving city globally! Besides the magnificent temple, the Ganga aarti conducted at the adjacent Dashahwamedha Ghat attracts thousands of visitors. And the same holds true for the other shrines and ghats in the city known for its spiritual leanings.

Over the centuries, this temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The current structure was built in the 18th century by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of the Maratha dynasty. The temple complex comprises several smaller shrines dedicated to other Hindu deities, including Lord Hanuman, Goddess Annapurna, and Lord Kaal Bhairav.

The temple has great significance for Hindus, and it is believed that a visit to the Shree Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga can grant one salvation or moksha. The temple attracts millions of devotees every year, especially during festivals such as Mahashivaratri, Navratri, and Diwali.
