What is the legend behind Somnath from Jyotirlinga – is depicted as below.

The legend behind the Somnath Jyotirlinga, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva, is associated with the Moon God, Soma, and his curse.

According to Hindu mythology, Soma, also known as Chandra, married to Prajapati Daksha’s 27 daughters (the Nakshatras). However, he was more attached to Rohini and neglected his other wives, which angered them. Lord Moon’s wives complained to their father, angered Prajapati, who insisted that he be impartial in his affections. When Chandra did not heed his warnings, Prajapati cursed him and made him lose his luster.Without moonlight, the world became dark; so all the gods requested Prajapati to retract his curse. He suggested to pray to Loard Shiva.

Soma then performed severe penance to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva, who granted him a boon that he would be revived from the curse. Soma then built a temple at Prabhasa, which came to be known as the Somnath Temple.

The legend further goes on to state that the Somnath Temple was built in gold by Lord Soma himself, and it was later rebuilt in silver by Lord Rama and in sandlewood by Krishna. The temple was also said to have been looted and destroyed several times by foreign invaders, including Mahmud of Ghazni.
