Story of Shri Girijatmaj from Lenyadri – Shri Girijatmaj is a form of Lord Ganesha worshipped at the Lenyadri cave temple in Maharashtra, India. The temple is one of the Ashtavinayak temples, which are eight sacred temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The story of Shri Girijatmaj is rooted in Hindu mythology and is as follows:

Once, Lord Shiva and his wife Goddess Parvati were travelling through the forest on their way to Kailash, their abode in the Himalayas. As they were passing through the Lenyadri mountains, Parvati felt tired and thirsty. Lord Shiva used his trident to strike a rock, and to everyone’s surprise, water gushed out of the rock. Parvati was pleased and asked Lord Shiva to make this place their home.

As time passed, Parvati began to feel homesick and missed her family. Lord Shiva suggested that she should perform a penance to bring her family to her. Parvati agreed and began to meditate on Lord Ganesha, who is known to be the remover of obstacles and the giver of wisdom.

Pleased with her devotion, Lord Ganesha appeared before her in the form of a child. He asked her why she was meditating and she told him of her desire to be reunited with her family. Lord Ganesha then agreed to stay at Lenyadri and be her son.

Hence, Shri Girijatmaj, meaning “the son of Girija,” which is another name for Parvati, became the name of the deity worshipped at the Lenyadri cave temple. The temple is located in a natural cave and is believed to have been carved out of the mountain during the Rashtrakuta dynasty in the 8th century CE.
