Story of Morgaon Mayureshwar – Mayureshwar Ganesha

Mayureshwar Morgaon

The story of Morgaon Mayureshwar is closely associated with the legend of Lord Ganesha’s birth. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati using her divine powers. She sculpted a beautiful statue of a boy and brought it to life by breathing her energy into it. She then instructed the boy to guard the entrance of her palace while she was taking a bath.

When Lord Shiva, Parvati’s husband, returned home and saw the boy, he was furious. He did not recognize the boy and mistook him for an intruder who had come to harm his wife. In his rage, Lord Shiva beheaded the boy with his trident.

When Goddess Parvati came out of the bath and saw her son lying dead, she was devastated. She demanded that Lord Shiva bring her son back to life, and Lord Shiva ordered his followers to go and find the head of the first living being they came across and bring it to him. The followers found the head of an elephant and brought it to Lord Shiva, who used his powers to attach it to the boy’s body.

Thus, Lord Ganesha came to be known as the elephant-headed god, and he became one of the most beloved and worshipped deities in the Hindu religion.

The temple of Morgaon Mayureshwar is said to be the place where Lord Ganesha appeared in his original form as the boy created by Goddess Parvati. The temple is located in the town of Morgaon in the Pune district of Maharashtra, India. It is believed that the temple was built during the reign of the Peshwas, who were great patrons of the arts and architecture.

The idol of Lord Ganesha in the temple is known as Mayureshwar, which means “lord of peacocks” in Sanskrit. The idol is depicted with five faces and ten arms, holding various weapons and symbols of power. It is said that Lord Ganesha appeared in this form to defeat the demon Sindhu, who had gained control over the peacocks and was causing destruction in the universe.
