The story of Ganesha’s vehicle, a mouse, first appears in the Matsya Purana, with the Ganesha Purana detailing how Ganesha came to mount the rat. It begins with a Gandharva, the celestial god of music, named Krauncha. One day, Krauncha was present at Lord Indra’s court, surrounded by many sages and Gandharvas. When Indra called him to come forward, Krauncha hurriedly stepped on the foot of sage Vamadeva. Infuriated, Vamadeva cursed him, turning Krauncha into a rodent.
Despite his transformation, he grew as large as a mountain and began destroying farms, cattle, and everything in his path. On his path of destruction, he arrived at the ashram of Maharishi Parashar, where Lord Ganesha was staying. Ganesha had heard about the giant rat wreaking havoc on people’s livelihoods. To stop the rampaging mouse, he used his pasha (noose) and looped it around the mouse, bringing it to his feet and at his mercy.
Ganesha expressed that the mouse deserved severe punishment for the devastation it had caused. However, the mouse pleaded for forgiveness, explaining that it could not control its size. Understanding this, Ganesha decided that the mouse would serve as his vehicle.
When Ganesha climbed onto the mouse, it struggled to bear his weight and began to shrink. The mouse then requested Lord Ganesha to become lighter so it could support him. Ganesha agreed to the mouse’s plea, and since then, the mouse has been Ganesha’s carrier.
One interpretation is that the rat represents the human mind, which is always restless and constantly seeking sensory experiences. Lord Ganesha, being the Lord of wisdom and knowledge, tames the mind and rides it, representing the control over the human mind.
In Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha is often depicted riding on a mouse or a rat, which is known as his Vahana or vehicle. The reason behind this depiction has several more interpretations.
Another interpretation is that the rat symbolizes material desires, and Lord Ganesha is depicted as riding on it to show that he has conquered these desires.
In addition, rats are known for their ability to gnaw through obstacles, and Lord Ganesha, being the remover of obstacles, uses the rat as a symbol of his ability to overcome any obstacle in the path of his devotees.
Overall, the rat as a ride for Lord Ganesha represents the idea of control, conquest, and overcoming obstacles nothing but a ganesha mouse symbolism.
